Nosferatu - Limited Edition Steelbook

Werner Herzog's version of Murnau's classic NOSFERATU is a captivating experience. Klaus Kinski is perfect as Count Dracula. He brilliantly conveys the loneliness and sadness of a creature who longs to be human. Count Dracula is the victim in this film, he does not enjoy his immortality and wants only to live, love and die like a human. Isabelle Adjani's ethereal beauty punctuates her ghostlike performance as Lucy, and Bruno Ganz turns in another solid performance as Jonathan. Like other Herzog films, NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE is exquisitely photographed, eliciting an almost transcendental experience. Jonathan's journey to Dracula's castle, the dancing of the plague-ridden townsfolk, and the final scene are prime examples. Once again, using the compositions of Popol Vuh and Wagner, Herzog creates an effective amalgamation of images an music. One drawback to the film is that it is so beautiful to look at, it is not especially frightening. This may discourage some Dracula fans, but to those who want a hypnotic, smart vampire film, this is the one to see.

Nosferatu Limited Edition Steelbook

A nice companion to the Original 1922 Nosferatu except unlike the Original that did not have rights to Bram Stoker's Dracula this one has and is directed very well by Werner Herzog and is very well restored for the Blu-ray format bringing out the German countryside and mountains in a release that is definitely worth buying and a good film for people who like RATS because there are lots of them.

Herzog Heaven!

This has always been one of my all time fave horror films so it's release on blu ray is both welcome & long overdue. Unusually for such a film there is minimal gore/violence, instead we are treated to a genuinely ethereal and oneiric experience, transporting us into the realms of an alien land. Yes, whole scenes are reprised from FW Murnau's original in homage but you can still revel in Kinski's mesmeric performance as the titular vampire, contrasted with Adjani's silent screen beauty. Whether it's the unnerving shots of the mummified remains in the opening sequence or the pivotal scene where the vampire's ship punctuates the quiet idyll of the soon to be invaded/infected provincial town, there is much to admire here. The haunting score adds to the overall atmosphere - if you're raised on MTV style fast cuts & action then this is decidedly old school - careful shot composition & pacing instead, but overall this is a masterful work worthy of your attention.
