This movie is the sequel and directed by Jack Nicholson. It also once again stars Nicholson as Jake Gittes. You get to learn what happened to another key person in the story which sort of completes the story. I love
"The Two Jakes".
But it is sort of hard to follow if you don't pay attention. There are two business partners whose last names start with B. You need to remember both their first and last names. So you don't get confused when they are spoken about. Also remember both Mr. B's wives first name. Otherwise the plot can be confusing.
Another inanimate 'star' is the wire recorder. These were one of HItler's secret secret weapons during world war two. The allies thought Hitler was broadcasting from one location (the studio) but it was a wire recording. A technology the allies did not know about.
This story is after that war, but wire recordings were still rare, and most people had never seen a 'recorder' and many people did not know about them. They were made by the Webster-Chicago company in America after the war. A big heavy metal box with spools of wire. They were later replaced by tape recorders. By that time most people were very familiar with them. But not at the time of this movie.
I'm not going to rehash the plot etc, that's already been done. I will say that on the negative, there were a a few places where the film / script felt a little weak, where I think it needed a stronger hand from the director, & would have benefited from a Polanski, De Palma, or Scorsese. I have to cut Nicholson some slack though. The Two Jakes was plagued with all sorts of pre-production issues, and it is a difficult job to both act in the lead role & direct a major motion picture at the same time & remain focused on both jobs. So kudo's to him for making the effort.
Also, *if* you are not familiar with its predecessor (Chinatown), then it could be confusing, as many plot elements, references, and characters from Chinatown are present. (A word to the wise, if you haven't seen Chinatown for quite sometime then do yourself a favor & watch it prior to viewing The Two Jakes).
On the positive, the attention to detail is fantastic! If you like seeing Los Angeles, California circa 1948, then this film is for you (& there are no 1970 cars time traveling as there were in one scene of Chinatown!). The locations, the wardrobe, the cars (oh my! that convertible that Jake drives!!!) - perfection! I have become completely enamored with the 1948-1950 Hudson Commodore 8 Convertible Brougham!
It was also really nice seeing some of the actors from Chinatown reprise their roles in this venture, including a voice-over done by Faye Dunaway in one scene! It was also cool how they worked Mickey Cohen into the film (as the big time mob figure named "Mickey Nice", a top L.A. Jewish gangster from Boyle Heights --- just like Cohen). Rubén Blades gets two thumbs up for his portrayal of the Mick'ster. And what can you say about Jack Nicholson that hasn't already been said? J.J. Gittes was a role tailored made for him.
So my verdict:
The Two Jakes is *not* Chinatown. But then it is not fair to expect The Two Jakes to be Chinatown (different director etc). This film may not ever be considered a great classic, like Chinatown, it is still a very good film, and despite its flaws, it is worth the viewing. Do up a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy The Two Jakes for what it is.
So get this, in 1949 iif you caught your wife in the sack with another dude, you could blast that turd legally. As long as you could show it wasn't pre-meditated, you were in the clear after emptying your revolver into his ass. So that's what Harvey Keitel does to his business partner when he catches him with his wife. He hires jack as a P.I. to record the whole thing, so he could show evidence that he just happened to find a gun there and shot him spur of the moment style. He does 0 jail time.
Madeline Stowe is the wife of the murdered guy and she's off the charts crazy. All my life men have known the rules for sticking it in crazy, but I guess in 1949, they didn't know. That's the only explanation for Jack doing her. There's a lot going on in this movie and it mostly involves people wanting the recording for various reasons. watching Chinatown first will be helpful.
Dear Hollywood... go back there, you might survive.
