This is a great comedy movie and I was very happy with my purchase. The price was very reasonable too.

I enjoy the fact writers wrote Eddie Murphy in as an unconventional vampire so whenever a scene demanded some random power they could just put it in for him to process the scene. Julius as a lackey made for a great Jar Jar Binks for adults truly a driving force for the movie and a timeless character. Also naming a police officer Justice is in no way heavy handed at all. My favorite scene would be an hour into the movie Maximilian randomly narrates how he used magic to fix an apartment. Which in no other part of the movie does he do which really sells the scene. My only concerns are for what purpose would people write that vampires immigrated to the Carribbeans unless it was solely to give Eddie Murphy a Jamaican accent. And if Maximilian couldn't possess Justice why couldn't he just take on the form of one of the various mob bosses to either incriminate or remove him entirely. Or why Maximilian would display Nikkis body exactly as Rita painting instead of disposing the body because that clearly created issues for himself later on. That and the fact that the movies main premise is about how vampires are a dying breed yet Julius turns from ghoul to vampire at the very end after putting on Maximilians ring kind of defeats the purpose of the plot I mean was the ring ever explicitly stated to be magic before. Does taking the ring off make him a ghoul again. If not can he use the ring to convert other people from ghoul to vampire. Why would he poof back with his body parts, jewelry, and dressed as Blade? Also at the end of it all it sounds like Julius adopts a sort of accent and howls, not to sure what howling has to do with vampires.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. Vampire in Brooklyn can be best described as a comedy thriller which is important to know right off the bat. If you are a into a serious vampire genre film, this is not for you. In saying that, there are so many witty lines and catch phrases that will keep you giggling while you enjoy the classic Dracula seduction story set in the 1990's in Brooklyn.

It's been compared to Blacula (1972). It's rare to see vampire genre films wherein the main story plot is based around Africans or African Americans in Hollywood, especially since the lore is based on Dracula who is of European origins. In my opinion any story that deviates from that is packed with a lot of imagination and guts. I also get a strong Love At First Bite (1979) influence in this story as well, another gutsy comedy. Most people haven't seen these movies and the similarities tend to go under the radar.

The special effects are decent and not too complicated so they hold up pretty well over time. There were good make-up transformations through out, but if you want to nitpick, there are a few probems. For one, the character Preacher Paulie could have used a little compressed powder to reduce is shine. I'm not sure if they wanted him to look sweaty, but it pulls me out of the story for a second.

Wes Craven delivers the horror with great sound effects and creating that ever popular scary mood with great music, an amazing score and went heavy with the smoke effects which he was such a fan of, it ended up on the poster.

Everyone delivers their best! If I wanted to nitpick, I would say that Angela Basset may have been too powerful an actress for the part, but there are some scenes where she delivers incredible reactions, such as when she vamps out for the first time and freaks out. Wonderful job!

Comparisons with 1972's Blacula are probably unavoidable (someone even refers to Murphy's Maximilian as "Blacula" at one point). But whereas Blacula (played by the late, great William Marshall) was an unwilling vampire and a tortured soul, Murphy seems to be going more for a Bela Lugosi vibe here. Lugosi's Dracula was evil incarnate, a monster with no redeeming human qualities, and Maximilian follows in those footsteps. There is little humor to be had here, which was deliberate on Murphy's part. He wanted to be menacing and diabolical, not funny, and at that he succeeds. Angela Bassett is great as a tough lady cop who is half vampire. However, I'm still not clear on why Murphy had to turn Bassett into a full vampire before the next full moon. Apparently, they felt they needed a ticking clock, but the underlying logic is never explained and it never ends up figuring into the plot. While inferior to Blacula, it's still an entertaining watch, and nowhere near as bad as it might have been, probably due to being directed by Wes Craven.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'An Excellent Horror/Comedy Movie Starring Eddie Murphy!'

The movie is excellent and it's like the movies 'Blacula' and 'Scream, Blacula, Scream!' Eddie Murphy is very good and funny as the vampire Maximillian who seduces Rita, played brilliantly by actress Angela Bassett. Actors Allen Payne,
Kadeem Hardison, John Witherspoon and Zakes Mokae are also very good as well as actresses Joanna Cassidy and Simbi Khali.Director Wes Craven did a fantastic job directing the movie and it was very scary to watch. Eddie is also good as the paunchy preacher and a fast talking thug.In the end Maximillian dies and Kadeem's character becomes the new vampire named Julius Jones! Today is Eddie Murphy's birthday and I hope he has a great day. REST IN POWER to the following actors and director:Mr. John Witherspoon (ne John Weatherspoon) (January 27, 1942-October 29, 2019); Mr. Raymond Neil Combs, Jr. (April 3, 1956-June 2, 1996); Mr. Wesley Earl 'Wes' Craven (August 2, 1939-August 30, 2015); Mr. Zakes Makgona Mokae (August 5, 1934-September 11, 2009): 'You all may be gone but you will never, ever be, forgotten.'
