The Freeling family's journey into the unknown is portrayed with genuine emotion, drawing audiences into their world and making them empathize with their struggles. The genuine bond between the family members adds a layer of authenticity to the story, making the supernatural events even more terrifying as they threaten to tear their lives apart.
One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its ability to balance horror and heart, creating moments of intense terror alongside poignant and heartfelt scenes. The iconic sequences, like Carol Anne's famous line "They're here," have become ingrained in popular culture and are still widely recognized and referenced to this day.
Furthermore, "Poltergeist" is notable for its groundbreaking special effects, especially considering it was released in 1982. The use of practical effects and puppetry adds a level of realism that modern CGI often struggles to achieve, making the haunting moments feel all the more authentic and spine-chilling.
The film's direction by Tobe Hooper and production by Steven Spielberg resulted in a perfect collaboration that showcases their collective talents. The director's ability to build suspense and create a creepy atmosphere is brilliantly complemented by Spielberg's signature touch of heartwarming family dynamics.
In conclusion, "Poltergeist" remains a timeless masterpiece that deserves its place among the greatest horror films of all time. Its combination of frights, family drama, and superb storytelling sets a standard that continues to inspire filmmakers and thrill audiences decades after its initial release. Whether you're a seasoned horror enthusiast or a casual moviegoer, "Poltergeist" is an absolute must-watch for its captivating storytelling, exceptional performances, and unforgettable scares
The original was absolutely a masterpiece, sorry had to say it
It was a good job
It wasn't great... Kind of remake of the first one exactly Just extended the ending to them leaving the house, not worth purcase to own... If you could borrow from a friend who purchased would be the way to go!!
But this movie definitely harkens back to a more "innocent" horror time. Now, most of the movies coming out are explicit in their violence, the supernatural aspects and emotion taking a back seat to the blood and gore. I'm okay with that. I like those movies too! This isn't one of those. It's like a less scary Conjuring with the feel-good ending and the little touches thrown in to pay respect to the original.
If that's not your jam, I completely respect that, but to say this movie isn't good just isn't true. All-in-all, I really enjoyed it. And I could do an ENTIRE movie with Jared Harris's Carrigan Burke and Jane Adams' Dr. Powell. They were, as always, stellar.

First up, why? If you’re a fan of the 1982 Steven Spielberg produced original film you know this story well and not much has been changed with the remake. Obviously lots of updated CGI effects is one reason for the re-do but apart from that I’m struggling to find another reason this was green-lit. It’s not a bad movie but so similar to the original I don’t really know why they bothered and honestly the original is a far far scarier affair.
The 3D version is mostly about a sense of depth rather than too many pop out moments which you would think a movie like this would revel in. For this reviewer I really wouldn’t bother with the 3D version and as an added bonus (if you can call it that) the 2D presentation offers an extended cut of the film but the regular 90 minutes is more than enough. Maybe rent or stream this one.
